New flexible electronics technology may lead to new medical uses

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? A Wayne State University researcher has developed technology that opens new possibilities for health care and medical applications of electronic devices.

Yong Xu, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering in the College of Engineering, has developed a simple technology compatible with silicon-on-insulator (SOI) complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) processes for making flexible electronics. "A Silicon-On-Insulator Complementary-Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Compatible Flexible Electronics Technology," published recently in Applied Physics Letters, describes the project, which was part of a National Science Foundation effort.

Flexible electronics have attracted a lot of attention for their enormous potential in many important applications, such as wearable health monitoring devices and medical implants. While a number of approaches to making flexible sensors or electronics have been developed over the last two decades, Xu said those technologies cannot take full advantage of mainstream CMOS processes.

Xu's technology has an advantage over existing methods, such as direct fabrication on flexible substrate and transfer printing, in that it is SOI-CMOS compatible. It fabricates high-performance and high-density CMOS circuits onto SOI wafers, and then uses two layers of Parylene C (a polymer), one of which is perforated, to bond them to flexible substrates.

The lamination of the electronics between those parylene layers offers the additional benefit of protection from environmental moisture. Xu said Parylene C, which creates a flexible skin, already has been used in other medical applications and is well tolerated by human tissue.

His process allows more high-performance electronic devices to be attached to the flexible surface by eliminating the transfer printing step, in which electronics are removed from a harder surface and integrated into a softer one. Additionally, the process allows various sensors and microfluidic devices to be integrated into the flexible substrate.

Xu said his technology could result in retinal prostheses that cause less tissue irritation and therefore work better and longer, as well as more comfortable wearable health monitoring devices. Other possible applications include balloon catheters and stents.

"The ultimate goal is to develop flexible and stretchable systems integrated with electronics, sensors, microfluidics, and power sources, which will have a profound impact on personalized medicine, telemedicine and health care delivery," Xu said.

Sweet! Astronomers spot sugar molecule near star

BERLIN (AP) ? Astronomers say that, for the first time, they have discovered one of the ingredients of life ? sugar ? in a gas cloud surrounding a young star.

The team of European and American astronomers says it spotted a simple sugar molecule called glycolaldehyde near a 10,000-year-old star similar to the sun.

Glycolaldehyde is needed to form ribonucleic acid, or RNA, which is similar in function to DNA.

Jes Jorgensen of the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark, said Wednesday that the glycolaldehyde was likely formed by radiation from the star hitting even simpler molecules floating through space.

The star, called IRAS 16293-2422, is about 400 light years from Earth.

Details of the discovery at the European Southern Observatory in Chile will be published in the journal Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Today we have part of a conversation between Israeli filmmaker Udi Aloni and Judith Butler excerpted from Aloni?s book What Does a Jew Want?: On Binationalism and other Specters. In this excerpt, Butler explains how her Jewish background led her to the study of philosophy and critical theory, which in turn led her back to a study of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Udi Aloni: Now I must be Jewish: what was your parents? relation to Judaism?

Judith Butler: My parents were practicing Jews. My mother grew up in an Orthodox synagogue and after my grandfather died, she went to a Conservative synagogue and a little later ended up in a Reform synagogue. My father was in reform synagogues from the beginning.

My mother?s uncles and aunts were all killed in Hungary. My grand?mother lost all of her relatives, except for the two nephews who came with them in the car when my grandmother went back in 1938 to see who she could rescue. It was important for me. I went to Hebrew school. But I also went after school to special classes on Jewish ethics because I was interested in the debates. So I didn?t do just the minimum. Through high school, I suppose, I continued Jewish studies alongside my public school education.

Udi Aloni: And you showed me the photos of the bar mitzvah of your son as a good, proud Jewish mother. (Laughs.)

Judith Butler: (Laughs.) Yes, but he had leeway to come up with any interpretation he wanted of the story of Noah. He started his speech, his parashah, by saying that he didn?t really believe in god, and there was a problem because he had to refer to god with a gendered pronoun. And he said that, if there were a god, he was quite sure that god didn?t really have a gender, but he was going to use ?he? just because it was easier.

So it?s been there from the start, it?s not as if I arrived at some place that I haven?t always been in. I grew very skeptical of a certain kind of Jewish separatism in my youth. I mean, I saw the Jewish community was always with each other; they didn?t trust anybody outside. You?d bring someone home, and the first question was ?Are they Jewish, are they not Jewish?? Then I entered into a lesbian community in college?late college, graduate school?and the first thing they asked was, ?Are you a feminist, are you not a feminist?? ?Are you a lesbian, are you not a lesbian?? and I thought, ?Enough with the separatism!?

It felt like the same kind of policing of the community. You only trust those who are absolutely like yourself, those who have signed a pledge of allegiance to this particular identity. Is that person really Jewish, maybe they?re not so Jewish. I don?t know if they?re really Jewish. Maybe they?re self-hating. Is that person lesbian? I think maybe they had a relationship with a man. What does that say about how true their identity was? I thought, I can?t live in a world in which identity is being policed in this way.

But if I go back to your other question . . . In Gender Trouble there is a whole discussion of melancholy. What is the condition under which we fail to grieve for others? Or the condition under which we fail to be able to acknowledge a loss and to grieve a loss? I presumed, throughout my childhood, that this was a question the Jewish community was asking itself. It was also a question that I was interested in when I went to study in Germany. The famous Mitscherlich book on the incapacity to mourn, which was a criticism of German postwar culture, was very very interesting to me.

In the seventies and eighties, in the gay and lesbian community, it became clear to me that very often, when a relationship would break up, a gay person wouldn?t be able to tell parents, his or her parents. There would be no public acknowledgment of the loss. It was as if there had never been a relationship and there had never been a loss. So here people were going through all kinds of emotional losses that were unacknowledged, and that became very acute during the AIDS crisis. I was most familiar with this in the U.S., where people were dying and there was no public acknowledgment of the death, and there was no public acknowledgment of what the relationships were that had been lost. In the earliest years of the AIDS crisis, there were many gay men who were unable to come out about the fact that their lovers were ill, A, and then dead, B.

They were unable to get access to the hospital to see their lovers, unable to call their parents and say, ?I have just lost the love of my life? or ?my lover has gone through a monstrous death and was denied medical support at the end, and now there is no public acknowledgment of this loss.?

This was extremely important to my thinking throughout the eighties and nineties. But it also became important to me as I started to think about war. After 9/11 I was shocked by the fact that there was public mourning for many of the people who died in the attacks on the World Trade Center, less public mourning for those who died in the attack on the Pentagon, no public mourning for the illegal workers of the WTC, and, for a very long time, no public acknowledgment of the gay and lesbian families and relationships that had been destroyed by the loss of one of the partners in the bombings. Then we went to war very quickly, Bush having decided that the time for grieving was over. I think he said that, after ten days, the time for grieving was over and now was the time for action. At which point we started killing populations abroad with no clear rationale. And the populations we targeted for violence were ones that never appeared to us in pictures. We never got little obituaries for them. We never heard anything about what lives had been destroyed. And we still don?t.

I then moved toward a different kind of theory, asking under what conditions certain lives are grievable and certain lives not grievable or ungrievable. It?s clear to me that in Israel-Palestine, and in the violent conflicts that have taken place over the years, there is differential grieving. Certain lives become grievable within the Israeli press, for instance?highly grievable and highly valuable?and others are under?stood as ungrievable because they are understood as instruments of war or they are understood as outside the nation, outside religion, or outside that sense of belonging which makes for a grievable life. The question of grievability has linked my work on queer politics?especially the AIDS crisis?with my more contemporary work on war and violence, including the work on Israel-Palestine.

Team science encompasses a wide range of disciplines, such as cognitive psychology, business management, education, and sociology, among others, and explores the ins and outs of group dynamics. It?s a relatively nascent field, but one for which a fair amount of research and observation already exist. Suffice to say, findings on what factors constitute a truly successful team constantly ebb and flow and shift. But the articles out there still warrant reading all the same, and anyone involved in planning and managing teams of all types might want to keep some of their pointers in mind when hoping to accomplish a specific goal.

1. Circumstances mean more than content.

   According to team science researcher Alex ?Sandy? Pentland at the MIT-based Human Performance Dynamics Laboratory, the cynical old yarn about who you know, not what you know is actually quite true. Test after test after test revealed that ?social intelligence? resonates much further than a working knowledge of the material at hand. Painstakingly selecting the right venue, audience, and times prove far more potent indicators of success rather than actually comprehending the subject inside and out, so keep that in mind when planning a promotional or competitive event.

2. Rewards aren?t always the best motivators.

   Some of the more pioneering team research conducted by Steve Kozlowski and his coterie of associates completely upended many of the assumptions society ? not to mention leaders themselves ? so often make regarding successful organizations. Most notably, that offering incentives doesn?t exactly improve performance any. By contrast, those whose daily individual burdens fall under heavier supervision enjoy the comparative freedom and collaboration work teams allow.

4. Small groups might help kids retain math lessons.

   A 2003 study by Charalampos Toumasis and team drew some evidence ? though admittedly not conclusive ? regarding the efficacy of group dynamics in learning and keeping math skills. But their findings certainly made quite a case for its inherent value, and they encourage future researchers to explore their findings even further. It makes sense that knowledge retention would increase in a collaborative setting, though. After all, as a supplement to textbooks and lectures, it allows participants to pull from their strengths and reach out to partners with complementary weaknesses.

   Surprise, surprise, right? Teams with prior experience already know how to maneuver one another?s unique quirks, abilities, and limitations. They believe that more testing is obviously necessary, but bringing in multiple viewpoints from across gender, gender identity, racial, religious, ethnic, and national spectrum increases the chances of forging a cogent solution faster ? not to mention nurtures a greater understanding of humanity?s inherent differences and breaks down social barriers still holding back women and minorities.

7. The best leaders don?t ?coddle? their stars.

   As with the research regarding reward distribution, researchers at Arizona State University and University of Miami noticed how the more ineffectual leaders tended to heap more praise and make allowances for their higher performers. Even if they earned more than their teammates, any whiff of preferential treatment compromises unit cohesion. Instead of motivating poorer performers to achieve the same ends, such a structure only serves to harbor resentment in the long run.

8. Set clearly defined goals.

   Even before J. Richard Hackman published his findings in the accessible book ?Leading Teams: Setting the Stage for Great Performances?, the integral role communication plays in forging successful group dynamics was already pretty well understood. But it?s worth repeating. If you want to achieve a goal, make sure you and everyone else on the team understands all the ins and outs of the end game. Otherwise you run the risk of hitting some sort of?Waiting for Godot?scenario, and nobody wants that.

9. Regular training.

There?s little worse than having your starting quarterback leave with an injury in the preseason, but it looks like the Lions got little more than a temporary scare from Matthew Stafford on Saturday.

The Lions quarterback left the game with an injury to his left hand, but x-rays taken during the contest were negative. Stafford, who wore a wrap on the hand, said afterward that he would have returned if it had been a regular season game.

?Probably what would have happened in a regular season game is right after it happened, I would have up for x-rays,? Stafford said, via Anwar Richardson of MLive.com. ?If they would have said they were negative, I would have come back in the game. It feels okay right now. It feels fine, really. It?s scary to look down and see your hand swell up by the second.?

Running back Kevin Smith also seems to have avoided an injury that will keep him out of the lineup for an extended period. The oft-injured running back hurt his ankle early in the second half, but also got good news when x-rays came back negative on Saturday.

?It just gets scary under the pile of those big guys laying on you. It?s just a minor tweak, something I?m pretty sure I can get rid of quick. Just stay in the training room,? Smith said. ?More than anything, I was very scared. Just being that I had a high ankle sprain, I know how long it took to get back healthy. It?s not a high ankle sprain, so that?s positive. I?ll get in the treatment room and get back as soon as I can.?

Given the thin ranks at running back early in the season for Detroit, an injury to Smith would have forced the team to look for backfield help before the season starts. They still might do that, but it doesn?t appear they will be quite as desperate as many feared when Smith hobbled off the field in Oakland.

Now the Lions just need to clear up the status of the two cornerbacks who went down against the Raiders to make the whole night a momentary scare instead of a lingering problem.

Titans force 5 turnovers in 32-27 win over Arizona

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? The Tennessee Titans' only complaint about their quarterback situation is finding a way to keep Jake Locker on the field longer to get more practice. Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt, meanwhile, will need to check the tape to see where his quarterbacks stand.

Locker threw for 134 yards and two touchdowns in his home debut as the Titans' starting quarterback, and he got plenty of help as Tennessee forced five turnovers in holding onto a 32-27 win over Arizona on Thursday night.

"He's our leader," Titans tight end Jared Cook said of Locker. "We had all the confidence in him. He made plays out there."

Titans coach Mike Munchak named Locker, the eighth pick overall draft pick in 2011, his starter on Monday. Locker threw both his TD passes in giving Tennessee a 17-10 halftime lead, and he was 11 of 20 for 134 yards with a 109.2 passer rating and a 23-10 lead when he left in the third quarter.

"He does things that people wouldn't notice he was doing that most young quarterbacks wouldn't even think of being able to handle," Munchak said. "Most young quarterbacks are coming out, even some veterans, they're more concerned about the coverage. He's adjusted protections and then getting into coverage. He's way ahead at the line of a lot of guys."

The Titans (No. 21 in the AP Pro32) got another strong showing on defense. End Kamerion Wimbley had two sacks, and linebacker Colin McCarthy returned one of his two interceptions 31 yards for a TD. McCarthy called the five turnovers huge for Tennessee (2-1).

"What we do in the preseason is going to build into the regular season, and we realize that. We've been consistent," McCarthy said.

Marc Mariani, a Pro Bowl returner as a rookie in 2010, broke both bones in his lower left leg at the end of a punt return and had surgery Thursday night. Munchak called the loss of Mariani, who also had become a trusted receiver, a big blow for the Titans.

The Cardinals (No. 23) struggled without left tackle Levi Brown, who tore his right triceps in Arizona's 31-27 win over Oakland last week. D.J. Young, a second-year player, started at left tackle. John Skelton, who started at quarterback for Arizona (1-3), lasted until early in the second quarter as Arizona tries to decide between him and Kevin Kolb.

"We were going against a good defensive front, and we were playing a young tackle that struggled and that makes it hard," Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt said. "Once we got it settled down a little bit Kevin had the benefit of that and he did some good things. But we can't turn the ball over. That's the thing that was disturbing."

Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald said he's glad he doesn't have to decide who starts at quarterback with the competition still "neck and neck."

"That's a question that Coach Whisenhunt can answer," Fitzgerald said. "I'm just going to go out there and grind it out, and whoever is going to be throwing the football, I'll be out there catching it."

Skelton couldn't have started much worse. Wimbley sacked him on the Cardinals' first offensive play. Then safety Michael Griffin intercepted his pass on the next play, returning it 24 yards after fumbling the ball. Skelton played one series ? a three-and-out ? into the second quarter and was 4 of 10 for 41 yards with a 12.9 passer rating.

Skelton said Young got beaten along with some of his teammates on some of the plays.

"It's frustrating getting out of the game that early and seeing the offense get into a flow," Skelton said. "But you've just got to make the most of your opportunities, and tonight I don't feel I did everything I could have."

Arizona trailed 17-3 and had only 69 yards offense until Kolb found Fitzgerald on a 53-yard pass to start an 86-yard drive capped with his 3-yard TD pass to Andre Roberts.

Wimbley sacked Kolb on his first offensive play. Kolb finished 17 of 22 for 156 yards with a TD but two interceptions ? both by McCarthy, the second-year middle linebacker out of Miami. McCarthy picked off a pass by Kolb late in the second quarter and intercepted Kolb's first pass 14 seconds into the third quarter that he ran back untouched for a TD.

The Titans turned safety Michael Griffin's interception into Locker's first TD this preseason. He found rookie Kendall Wright on the right sideline for a 10-yard TD pass for a 7-0 lead.

Locker overthrew a couple of receivers, including the 6-foot-5 Cook who stretched out for a nice 35-yard catch he could have taken for a TD if thrown better. Locker found Nate Washington on a crossing route for a 28-yard TD pass in an 80-yard drive he kept alive by scrambling twice for 11 yards.

"It was cool to be able to have the first start here in Tennessee and be welcomed the way I was," Locker said. "I've always appreciated this support, and I will continue to."
