Landry, No. 8 LSU hold off Arkansas 20-13
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) ? Jarvis Landry helped LSU keep the SEC championship in reach with a 20-13 win over Arkansas on Friday.
Now the receiver and the rest of the No. 8 Tigers must sit back and wait while their next destination ? perhaps next weekend's SEC championship game ? is played out elsewhere.
Landry's spectacular, reaching, one-handed touchdown catch late in the first half helped LSU (10-2, 6-2 Southeastern Conference) hold off the reeling Razorbacks. It marked the sixth time in eight seasons that the Tigers have reached double-digit wins under coach Les Miles.
LSU must now hope for an Alabama loss to Auburn (not likely) and Texas A&M victory against Missouri (very possible) on Saturday in order to win the SEC West and earn a trip to Atlanta. Even without a division crown, the Tigers could still get an at-large bid to the BCS.
"We'll take the next day and a half or so and watch TV tomorrow and be excited about it, and move forward and see how things go," Miles said.
Zach Mettenberger passed for 217 yards and hooked up with Landry for the play of the day with 1:12 left in the first half to put LSU up 10-0. The Tigers were outgained 462-306 in total yardage, but they were able to hold off record-setting performances by Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson and receiver Cobi Hamilton.
Wilson was 31 of 52 passing for the Razorbacks (4-8, 2-6) whose fall from preseason top 10 is now complete. The senior set the school record for career passing yards in the loss, while Hamilton set the school record for receptions in a career with 175.
The records were a bright spot in an otherwise dismal season for a Razorbacks team that struggled mightily following the April firing of former coach Bobby Petrino. Arkansas was 21-5 the last two seasons and entered the season with SEC and national championship expectations, but it was eliminated from the bowl picture following last week's loss at Mississippi State.
"We kind of stuck together (through) all the adversity," Hamilton said. "We're still brothers. We're still the same 2012 team that everybody had high expectations for. But we just stuck together."
The Tigers took at 17-3 lead early in the third quarter after a 1-yard touchdown run by Jeremy Hill, who finished with 77 yards rushing on 18 carries. The touchdown followed an 86-yard kickoff return by Michael Ford to the Arkansas 9.
It also appeared to be the clincher for LSU, though the Razorbacks rallied behind the combination of Wilson and Hamilton.
Wilson passed former Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallet's mark of 7,493 yards passing in the second quarter, finishing with 359 yards in the game and 7,765 yards for his career, and his 28-yard touchdown pass to freshman Mekale McKay in the third quarter closed the LSU lead to 17-10.
After forcing a Tigers' punt, the Razorbacks used a key fourth-and-1 conversion to set up another scoring opportunity. Wilson found Jonathan Williams for a 37-yard completion on the fourth down at midfield, helping to set up a second-and-goal at the LSU 1.
Arkansas was unable, however, to find the end zone on its next two plays. Interim coach John L. Smith then elected to kick a 17-yard field goal, which backup kicker John Henson converted to close the Tigers' lead to 17-13.
The Razorbacks never did find the end zone again, bringing a likely end to the Arkansas career of Smith ? who was signed to a 10-month contract following Petrino's firing.
"That's the right call," Smith said of the field goal attempt. "I mean, you have to score twice to win it, don't you? At least, I think you had to score twice to win it unless my math was wrong. So do you take it there? You have to take the sure points and then come back you have to score again anyway. So that was the thought, and I think that's the right call."
The Razorbacks had one final chance in the closing seconds, but Wilson's second-down attempt from the LSU 18 was over the head of McKay as time expired.
LSU's final score came on a 27-yard field goal by Drew Alleman with 1:26 remaining, giving it a 20-13 lead. The score came after a key 47-yard third-down completion from Mettenberger to Odell Beckham, who finished with eight catches for 112 yards.
The Tigers led 10-0 at halftime in their first game in Fayetteville since 1992. They did so despite gaining the same 165 yards of total offense as the Razorbacks, whose season-long series of miscues continued in the half.
Arkansas, next to last in the SEC in red-zone offense, squandered three scoring opportunities in the half. Dennis Johnson fumbled near the LSU goal line on the game's opening drive, and kicker Zach Hocker misfired on a pair of field goal attempts before being benched in favor of Henson in the second half.
LSU's first touchdown came late in the first half when Mettenberger found Landry in the back of the end zone for a 22-yard touchdown. Landry had to reach back over his wrong shoulder to stretch out and snare the ball with his right hand, landing well in bounds.
"I felt that the throw kind of kept me in bounds," Landry said. "I felt that if he had led me any, there was a possibility I could have been out of bounds.
"It's just one of those throws where Zach trusted me, and I just went up and made it."
Hamilton finished with 10 catches for 98 yards in his final game at Arkansas, finishing his career with 175 catches. His record broke the former mark of 168 catches, set last year by Minnesota Vikings' rookie Jarius Wright.

Father thankful his family escaped fire that destroyed their home and ...
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A metro family lost their home and business in a fire Thursday, but is giving thanks they survived the blaze.
?That is a blessing, and that is the main thing," said homeowner Luther Walker. "We have our lives and our health and we got our dog."
He and his wife run a small concrete and construction business from their home. He's not sure what effect this fire will have on the couple?s ability to continue work.
The fire started around 9:45 a.m. at the Walker home in the 3400 block of Delavan in Kansas City, Kan., just off of I-635.
Walker said that even though his home-based concrete business was destroyed along with the 100-plus-year-old house, he?s thankful he and his family are alive.
Also inside the home were Walker?s wife, their teenage daughter, a son home from school at Kansas State University and the family dog, Brownie.
Nobody was injured.
KCK Fire Chief Craig Duke said an electrical issue is believed to have caused the fire. He said the family reported the lights had been flickering lately in the home when the wind blew.
?He did indicate they were doing some electrical work. They had some electrical issues: flickering lights and some other issues," Duke said. "They had an electrician out trying to find what the issue was.?
Wind played a factor in fire crews? strategies.?
?Our crews got inside and as they got inside, the fire started pushing them back, the wind picked up," he explained.
Because of the swift wind and age of the building, firefighters had to fight the blaze from outside of the building?s perimeter.

Deerfield Beach Toddler Drowned In Community Pool ? CBS Miami
DEERFIELD BEACH (CBS4) ? The father of a Deerfield Beach toddler has a message for parents after his daughter drowned in a community pool.
?They just come around once. Make sure you enjoy every single moment every single laugh and give them all the love they need,? said Luis Lacerda.
The Broward County Sheriff?s office said the two-year old girl got out of her home undetected sometime Saturday.
?The mother was home with the child and at some point the child slipped out from the residence,? said Mike Jachles from BSO.
Deputies said when the child?s father got home, he realized the little girl was missing and the family called 9-1-1.
?While our deputies were responding?we received another call that the child?s father located the child in the pool,? said Jachles.
According to Jachles, the father pulled the child out of the pool and began CPR. Rescue crews arrived, continued CPR, then took the girl to the hospital via helicopter where the little girl was pronounced dead.
?My daughter was always full of life, full of joy. There?s never been a single day that I haven?t seen the baby smile just the kind of kid that came into the room brightened up the room,? said Lacer.
It?s not clear exactly how the little girl got into the pool area, but her father says he?d like to see magnetic locks on gates surrounding community pools.
? You never know when people are going to be here and then go, so just watch over them and make sure if there?s bodies of water, double check your locks double check your other gates make sure the pools are secured,? said Lacerda.
BSO said the investigation is ongoing, but it appears to be a ?tragic accident.?

Mr Sharma also said that India wanted to discuss with China the issue of market access for IT and pharmaceuticals.
India-China bilateral trade hit a record $73.9 billion last year, but the ballooning trade deficit in Beijing's favour rose to over $27 billion.
Bilateral trade registered a $12.2 billion increase in 2011, taking the total to $73.9 billion as against $61.7 billion in 2010, according to official trade figures for 2011.

EDINBORO -- Edinboro University of Pennsylvania collected 3,000 pounds of pencils, paper and other supplies for area elementary schools during its Stuff the Bus campaign.
The campaign was launched Nov. 1 in honor of Julie Wollman's inauguration as university president. Volunteers collected supplies on campus and at the McDonald's restaurant on Interchange Road.
The first delivery of supplies was made to Edinboro Elementary School on Nov. 8.

Obama, on Asia trip, first pays visit to Thailand
BANGKOK (AP) ? President Barack Obama on Sunday launched a three-day Southeast Asia tour, hailing alliances with countries such as Thailand as cornerstones of the administration's deeper commitment to the Asia-Pacific region.
While in Asia, however, Obama will be dividing his attention by monitoring the escalating conflict between Israel and the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip. Obama has been in regular contact with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as well as with Egyptian and Turkish leaders who might hold sway with the Hamas leadership.
Obama landed in Bangkok Sunday afternoon, greeted by 40 saluting military guards who flanked both sides of a red carpet.
His schedule is packed with sightseeing, a royal audience with King Bhumibol Adulyadej, a private meeting with Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, a joint press conference and an official dinner.
On a steamy day, Obama began with a visit to the Wat Pho Royal Monastery, a cultural must-see in Bangkok. In stocking feet, the president and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton walked around a golden statue of a sitting Buddha. The complex is a sprawling display of buildings with colorful spires, gardens and waterfalls.
Obama is also visiting Myanmar and Cambodia in his first trip abroad since winning a second term.
The visit to Thailand, less than 18 hours long, is a gesture of friendship to a long-standing partner and major non-NATO ally.
Still, the two countries have faced strains, most recently after the 2006 military coup that deposed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, and Obama's visit offers an opportunity to restate and broaden the relationship.
"It was very important for us to send a signal to the region that allies are going to continue to be the foundation of our approach" to establishing a more prominent presence in Asia, deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes told reporters traveling with the president aboard Air Force One.
Obama is also seeking to open new markets for U.S. businesses; the United States is Thailand's third biggest trading partner, behind China and Japan. Becoming a counterweight to China in the region is a keystone of Obama's so-called pivot to the Asia-Pacific region.
Obama's trip comes on the heels of meetings in Thailand between Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and his Thai counterparts on security and military cooperation on issues ranging from fighting weapons proliferation to disaster relief to countering piracy.
Alluding to the 2006 coup, Obama's national security adviser, Tom Donilon, said in a speech ahead of the trip last week that Obama would build on Panetta's outreach to reinforce the relationship and "support the continued peaceful restoration of democratic order after a turbulent period."
After his time at the temple, Obama was to pay a courtesy call to ailing 86-year-old, U.S.-born King Bhumibol Adulyadej in his hospital quarters. The king, the longest serving living monarch, was born in Cambridge, Mass., and studied in Europe.
The centerpiece of the Asia trip comes Monday when Obama travels to Myanmar, the once reclusive and autocratic state that has begun instituting democratic measures. Obama has eased sanction on the country, also known as Burma, and his visit will be the first there by a sitting U.S. president.
Obama aides see Myanmar as not only a success story but also as a signal to other countries that the U.S. will reward democratic behavior.
"If Burma can continue to succeed in a democratic transition, then that can potentially send a powerful message regionally and around the world...that if countries do take the right decisions, we have to be there with incentives," Rhodes said.

Justice official: Register voters automatically
WASHINGTON (AP) ? One of the top enforcers of the nation's civil rights laws said Friday government should be responsible for automatically registering citizens to vote by using existing databases to compile lists of all eligible residents in each jurisdiction.
The proposal by Assistant Attorney General Thomas Perez, chief of the Justice Department's civil rights division, follows an election with breakdowns that forced voters in many states to wait in line for hours.
In remarks at George Washington University law school, Perez said census data shows that of 75 million adult citizens who failed to vote in the 2008 presidential election, 60 million were not registered and therefore ineligible to cast a ballot.
Perez says one of the biggest barriers to voting in this country is an antiquated registration system.
President Barack Obama has said the problem must be dealt with and "we in the Justice Department ... have already begun discussing ways to address long lines and other election administration problems, whether through proposed legislation, executive action and other policy measures," Perez said in prepared remarks. He welcomed his audience to contribute suggestions.
"For too many people in our democracy, the act of voting has become an endurance contest," said Perez. "I used to run marathons; you should not feel like you have endured a marathon when you vote."
Perez said the current registration system is needlessly complex and forces state and local officials to manually process a crush of new registrations, most handwritten, every election season. This leaves "the system riddled with errors, too often, creating chaos at the polls," Perez said. "That's exactly what we saw at a number of polling places on Election Day last week."
"Fortunately, modern technology provides a straightforward fix for these problems - if we have the political will to bring our election systems into the 21st century," Perez said. "It should be the government's responsibility to automatically register citizens to vote, by compiling - from databases that already exist - a list of all eligible residents in each jurisdiction. Of course, these lists would be used solely to administer elections - and would protect essential privacy rights." He did not say which level of government should be responsible for implementing such changes.
Perez said the nation also must address the problem that 1 in 9 Americans moves every year, but voter registration often does not move with people who move.
Election officials should work together to establish a program of "permanent, portable registration so that voters who move can vote at their new polling place on Election Day," Perez said. In the meantime, he said states should implement fail-safe procedures to correct voter-roll errors and omissions by allowing every voter to cast a regular, nonprovisional ballot on Election Day.
Perez supported allowing voters to register and cast their ballots on the same day. He called same-day registration "a reform we should be considering seriously" because it would promote voter participation.
He said that in the 2008 presidential election, five of the six states with the highest turnout in the country were states with same-day registration. Preliminary turnout estimates for the 2012 election, he said, show that this pattern will likely continue.
Perez also said:
?The Justice Department will consider whether national standards for counting provisional ballots for federal elections are needed to ensure that voters are not disenfranchised by appearing in the wrong polling place or by poll worker errors.
?It is "time to rethink our largely partisan system of state and local election administration. We risk leaving our election processes open to partisan mischief ? or to the perception of such mischief. We should have a serious conversation about solutions to this risk, including developing an entirely professionalized and nonpartisan system for administering our elections."
?Congress should enact legislation that would deter and punish lawbreakers who conduct misinformation campaigns such as telling people that Election Day has been moved or that only one adult per household can cast a ballot. Sens. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Ben Cardin, D-Md., have introduced the measure.
