Microsoft India Consolidates Startup Offerings

Mumbai: Software giant Microsoft India today said it has consolidated all of its startup related offerings under a single umbrella.

In alignment with the recent Microsoft Ventures announcement, Microsoft India will now offer startups a single point of entry to engage with Microsoft through a broad-based and holistic approach, the company said in a statement.

This will feature a seed fund, an accelerator programme and the community evangelism programme called BizSpark, it added.

Gozoop acquires social media agency Red Digital, Digital agency Gozoop today said it will acquire Red Digital, an Indian social media agency, for an undisclosed amount.

Post the acquisition, Gozoop aims to double its Indian revenue in the next financial year. It will also increase the employee strength of the company to about 100 members, it said in a statement.

"Red Digital's brands and talent, together with Gozoop's end-to-end digital service offerings and social products, will help move our collective clients. We look forward to acquiring digital agencies to fuel our growth in India and to enter international markets like the US, Australia and Qatar," Gozoop co-founder and India MD Ahmed Naqvi said.

The desktop is based on the latest 4th generation Intel Core processors and NVIDIA GeForce GTX graphics. It also comes with a wireless charger tray for wireless recharging of smartphones and tablets, Asus said in a statement.

It also features Asus Power Pack -- a removable UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) that acts like a mini UPS for the PC providing 60 seconds of power backup.

Fifth edition of FAIRPRO 2013 to begin from Aug 2 * The fifth edition of property fair FAIRPRO 2013, organised by CREDAI (Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Association of India), will begin here from August 2.

The fair would present properties of over 30 member developers, apart from housing finance companies assisting prospective buyers with instant home loan processing option, said I Gugan, Chairman, FAIRPRO.

A wide range of properties ranging from Rs 25 lakh to Rs 6 crore would be on offer, he added.

WTO backs complaint against Chinese duties on U.S. chicken exports

GENEVA (Reuters) - The United States won a dispute against China at the World Trade Organization on Friday, when a panel of adjudicators found China had broken the WTO rules on at least 16 of 21 counts brought up in the U.S. complaint.

"This decision sends a clear message that the Obama Administration can fight and win for American farmers, businesses, and workers in the global trading system, ensuring that America gets the benefit of the rules and market access we have negotiated in our international trade agreements," U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman said in an email from his office.

The U.S. complaint, raised in September 2011, concerned China's duties on U.S. exports of chicken broiler products. It was widely seen as one of a string of tit-for-tat trade disputes and followed a U.S. ban on imports of Chinese cooked chicken.

The United States had told the WTO it was the largest exporter of broiler products to China before the duties were imposed, but its exports subsequently fell by nearly 90 percent.

The U.S. complaint cited damage done to exporters like Pilgrim's Pride (PPC.O), Tyson Foods Inc (TSN.N) and Keystone, a brand held by Brazil's Marfrig Alimentos SA (MRFG3.SA).

China justified its duties by saying U.S. imports were unfairly subsidized and dumped on the Chinese market, causing material injury to China's domestic industry.

China's Ministry of Commerce did not immediately comment on the WTO ruling. China can appeal the ruling within 60 days.

FDA defining what "gluten free" means on packages

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A label that reads "gluten free" will now mean the same thing for all food, regardless of which kind you buy.

After more than a six-year delay, the Food and Drug Administration has set a new standard for labels that will make shopping easier for consumers on gluten-restricted diets. Until now, the term "gluten free" had not been regulated, and manufacturers made their own decisions about what it means.

Under an FDA rule announced Friday, products labeled "gluten free" still won't have to be technically free of wheat, rye and barley and their derivatives. But they will have to contain less than 20 parts per million of gluten.

That amount is generally recognized by the medical community to be low enough so that most people who have celiac disease won't get sick if they eat it.

People who suffer from celiac disease don't absorb nutrients well and can get sick from the gluten found in wheat and other cereal grains. Other countries already have similar standards.

Celiac disease affects up to 3 million Americans. It causes abdominal pain, bloating and diarrhea, and people who have it can suffer weight loss, fatigue, rashes and other long-term medical problems. Celiac is a diagnosed illness that is more severe than gluten sensitivity, which some people self-diagnose.

Only a very small number of people wouldn't be able to ingest the amount of gluten that will be allowed under the new rule, FDA officials said.

"Adherence to a gluten-free diet is the key to treating celiac disease, which can be very disruptive to everyday life," FDA Commissioner Margaret A. Hamburg said. "The FDA's new 'gluten-free' definition will help people with this condition make food choices with confidence and allow them to better manage their health."

The new FDA rule also would ensure that foods with the labels "no gluten," ''free of gluten," and "without gluten" meet the definition. Manufacturers will have a year to comply, though the FDA urged companies to meet the definition sooner.

Ten years ago, most people had never heard of celiac disease. But awareness and diagnosis of the illness has exploded in recent years. It's not entirely clear why ? some researchers say it was under-diagnosed; others say it's because people eat more processed wheat products like pastas and baked goods than in past decades, and those items use types of wheat that have a higher gluten content.

Many companies that market gluten-free foods already meet the standard. But Andrea Levario of the American Celiac Disease Alliance said the federal guidelines will cut down on painstaking shopping for those who suffer from celiac disease.

Levario said that wheat must be labeled on food packages but that barley and rye are often hidden ingredients in food. The standard will also ensure that companies can't label products "gluten-free" even if they are cross-contaminated from other products made in the same manufacturing facility. She said shopping can be like "playing Russian roulette" for people who have celiac.

"This will eliminate confusion for the consumer and will cut down on calls to companies to try and determine whether their products are safe and gluten free," she said.

Michael Taylor, FDA deputy commissioner for foods, said the rule originally proposed during the George W. Bush administration was delayed because the agency was evaluating what standard was correct.

"We wanted to do a careful scientific assessment of the data and the range of sensitivities," Taylor said.

Congress originally directed the FDA to set the standards in 2004 as part of a larger law that required food packaging to list major allergens. Rep. Nita Lowey, D-N.Y., originally introduced a bill calling for the standards in 1999. She praised the FDA rules and called them "a long time coming."

In the decade since Congress considered the standards, gluten-free foods have become big business. Millions of people are buying the foods because they say they make them feel better, even if they don't have celiac disease. Americans spent more than $4 billion on gluten-free foods last year, according to the American Celiac Disease Alliance, and a major manufacturing survey issued this week suggested that the niche industry is giving an economic boost to the food industry overall.

One of the largest manufacturers of gluten free foods, Boulder Brands, said it has been seeing double-digit growth in sales and is looking at expanding into bigger markets. The company's brands, Glutino and Udi's, already meet the new standards.

"We expect the new regulations to impact sales in a positive way as consumers can feel more confident in their gluten free choices," said T.J. McIntyre, executive vice president of the company.

Fugitive Snowden slips out of Moscow airport for 'secure' base

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Fugitive former U.S. spy agency contractor Edward Snowden slipped quietly out of Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport on Thursday after Russia granted him temporary asylum, ending more than a month in limbo in the transit area.

A Russian lawyer who has been assisting Snowden said the American, who is wanted in the United States for leaking details of secret government intelligence programs, had gone to a secure location which would remain secret.

After weeks staying out of sight from hordes of reporters desperate for a glimpse of him, Snowden managed to slip away in a taxi without being spotted. Grainy images of his passport showed he had been granted asylum for a year from July 31.

"He is the most wanted man on planet Earth. What do you think he is going to do? He has to think about his personal security. I cannot tell you where he is going," his lawyer, Anatoly Kucherena, told Reuters.

"I put him in a taxi 15 to 20 minutes ago and gave him his certificate on getting refugee status in the Russian Federation," he said. "He can live wherever he wants in Russia. It's his personal choice."

He said Snowden was not going to stay at any embassy in Moscow, although three Latin American countries have offered to shelter him. Snowden was well, he added.

Snowden was accompanied by Sarah Harrison, a representative of the anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks, which confirmed he had left the airport.

"We would like to thank the Russian people and all those others who have helped to protect Mr. Snowden. We have won the battle - now the war," WikiLeaks said on Twitter.

Snowden, 30, arrived in Moscow from Hong Kong on June 23. Nicaragua, Bolivia and Venezuela have offered him refuge but there are no direct commercial flights to Latin America and he was concerned the United States would intercept his flight to prevent him reaching his destination.

Snowden's case has caused new strains in relations between Russia and the United States which wants him extradited to face espionage charges.

The White House has signaled that President Barack Obama could consider boycotting a planned summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow in early September.

But a senior Kremlin official said ties between Russia and the United States would not suffer because of what he said was a "relatively insignificant" case.

"Our president has ... expressed hope many times that this will not affect the character of our relations," Yuri Ushakov, Putin's top foreign policy adviser, told reporters.

He said there was no sign that U.S. President Barack Obama would cancel the planned visit in September.

I Do: Wedding Nerves And Tears At The Hilton Hotel

The Almeida Festival is coming to a close; we managed to catch the first night of I Do, part of the festival, performed at the Hilton Hotel just down the road from the Almeida itself last night.

I Do isn?t your ordinary sit-down play. The audience is split into six groups (decided, romantically, by the colour of the rose you pick out at the ticket desk) and led by an usher through six rooms, each occupied by members of a wedding party getting ready for the impending ceremony. Because the order in which you visit each room is completely random, there isn?t really a plot as such but rather a collection of scenes that work to build up the whole. During the evening, you?ll stumble upon a room full of bridesmaids wrangling the bride into her dress; the bride?s mother stuffing money into envelopes; the maid of honour and best man getting frisky; the bride?s ominous father pacing the room with a letter; the groom hurriedly pulling on joggers and grabbing his bag? you get the gist.

What?s most striking about this production is the intricacy of the timing. The actors continuously slip in and out of rooms to join and then leave different scenes, which only becomes apparent after you?ve been to all six rooms. Each scene also finishes at precisely the same time, so the bemused audience steps out into the hallway simultaneously, exchanging smiles. This really is a clever feat of choreography, and one that gets you thinking out the box of conventional theatre.

There are times when it feels like you?re watching very little, such as an old man trying to pull on a shirt or the best man going over and over a quite frankly dull speech (the script work in this play isn?t one of its prominent features), but this adds to the ?feel? of it all; we really are in a hotel, and this is what people genuinely do. The cast are certainly to be commended, as each of them perform the same scene six times in a row ? and they have two performances a night.

So: for those after a slightly different theatre experience, or indeed for those that love weddings and a bit of family drama, I Do is ideal. Catch it quick, because it?s only on for three nights.
