NEW YORK — "Oh my god, they're so normal!" one fan declared as she caught a glimpse of the Wanted leaving their hotel this morning. It was one of many exciting fan encounters the band would have on Tuesday (April 24), as they were out in New York City promoting their self-titled U.S. debut EP and the release of their new video, "Chasing the Sun."

MTV News was on hand with the guys in the early hours Tuesday while they chilled in the "Today" show green room chatting, eating breakfast and goofing around with a fat cat and a dog named Ted, both of whom were on the show today as well.

"We just arrived and we saw a 40-pound cat crawling across the floor," group member Siva Kaneswaran told MTV News about the early morning wakeup call and the show's other guest, a cat who is currently having his own moment chasing the sun. "This is the kind of stuff that happens to the Wanted. It's too early for this," he continued. "There's lots of big stuff happening today and were gonna do some crazy things."

Before they performed "Chasing" and their hit single "Glad You Came" on the morning news show, Siva explained how the guys prep for an appearance on a show like "Today."

"We prepared for this show this morning by having cups of tea and Cheerios, good for the heart," Siva, who declared he is not a morning person, shared. "Basically, just psych each other, gaze into each other's eyes and get excited, and that's what gets us through the day."

The "Today" show was the first of many media appearances the Wanted will make on Tuesday, leading up to their "MTV First" airing tonight at 7:53 p.m. ET on MTV. They will sit down with MTV News' Sway Calloway to debut and chat about the "Chasing" video.

Immediately following the MTV premiere, the fivesome are hanging around for an additional 30-minute live Q&A session with Sway on MTV.com. Fans can get in on the action by submitting video or text questions via MTV.com or @MTVNews on Twitter, using the hashtags #MTVFirst or #AskTheWanted.

MTV News will be on hand with the guys all day, so stay tuned for more Big Apple dispatches.

Boyz II Men: The 'Battle Of The Boy Bands' Forefathers

Boyz up against longtime rivals Jodeci in round one; voting open now!
By John Mitchell, with reporting by Jocelyn Vena

Our Battle of the Boy Bands got off to a roaring start Monday as fans of new groups like the Wanted and One Direction and legacy acts like 'NSYNC and New Kids on the Block hit our bracket hard to push their favorites on to the next round.

One group that is in it to win it is Boyz II Men, who told MTV News they were among the "progenitors" of the entire boy-band genre. "We were kind of like the progenitors, the torch holders of a lot of the artists, of a lot of the boy bands that came about," Nathan Morris told us.

Highest Chart Achievement
In the mid-'90s, Boyz II Men ruled the charts. That's not hyperbole, either — three of the top-10 longest-running #1 singles in the history of the Billboard chart belong to the band. Their top song, though, is actually a duet, and with 16 weeks spent atop the chart, it's also the biggest single ever: "One Sweet Day" with Mariah Carey.

Boyz II Men are one of just four artists or groups to have held the #1 spot for at least 50 weeks cumulatively. On the all-time list, they fall at #4, behind only (ahem!) Elvis Presley, the Beatles and Carey. (With 47 weeks, Usher falls just short at #5.) Clearly, the band has quite a few chart achievements under its belt.

Standout Video
The Boyz made a series of great videos for their hits "End of the Road," "I'll Make Love to You" and "Water Runs Dry," but for its cameos alone, "On Bended Knee" rises above. In the clip, each band member breaks up with and eventually reconciles with a girlfriend, played by four famous actresses: Victoria Rowell, Renée Jones and, most importantly for nostalgia addicts, Kim Fields (Tootie from "The Facts of Life" and later "Living Single") and Lark Voorhies (that's Lisa Turtle from "Saved by the Bell" to you).

Defining Tune
Regardless of your age, chances are you know every word to many of Boyz II Men's greatest hits, so it's hard to pick just one defining tune. But there really is something special about 1994's "I'll Make Love to You." Discounting their Carey collab "One Sweet Day," the song is the band's biggest standalone hit (14 weeks at #1). The Babyface-written song defines the phrase "power ballad" and won the group a 1995 Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.

Debut Album
These guys got straight to the hitmaking with their 1991 debut, Cooleyhighharmony. Executive produced by Michael Bivins of New Edition and Bell Biv DeVoe, the album introduced the Boyz in grand fashion with the funky R&B jam "Motownphilly" and brought them another hit with "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday."

Biggest Competition
That would most definitely be Jodeci, who in the '90s went head to head with the Boyz on the charts with their similar (if not as internationally successful and chart-topping) blending of R&B and soul.

So, how does the band feel about the competition? Well, they seem to have a lot of respect for their former competitors. Regarding Jodeci, Boyz II Men's Shawn Stockman told MTV News, "It was a mutual respect that we had for those guys and them for us."

After revealing that the two bands once had a bit of a beef, Stockman elaborated that it was really just "friendly competition." "I'm sure they had the same mentality as far as being onstage and trying to outdo us just like we were trying to outdo them," he shared. "They were great artists, and we didn't want to have people talking about [how] they did better than us, just like they probably felt the same way."

Voting in round one of MTV's Battle of the Boy Bands is now open and runs until noon ET on Thursday, April 26. Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite band made the cut, make sure you keep voting. Spread the word on Twitter using the hashtag #BBB and like us on Facebook for updates!

Socialcam Just Added Millions Of New Users, So It Tweaked Its App To Make Them Stick Around

socialcamlogoappSocialcam, the "Instagram for video" iPhone app that spun out of user generated video sharing pioneer Justin.tv last year, has had a pretty crazy past week. A Hacker News post aimed at recruiting engineers for the company said that the app added four million new users over the past weekend alone -- I'm hearing word that Socialcam's total user count has pushed past 10 million -- and the company is part of the most hotly pursued YC classes from an investor standpoint. You'd think that Socialcam's three-person team would be totally overwhelmed. Well, they probably are -- but they're still apparently shipping lots of app updates.

Report: Alarming rise in piracy off West Africa

Dave Jenkins/Rex Features

A suspected pirate vessel is searched by a boarding team from a U.K. naval vessel 350 nautical miles from the Somali coast in November.

By Ian Johnston, msnbc.com

The number of pirate attacks in West African waters is increasing alarmingly, according to a new report.

The International Maritime Bureau?s global piracy report said there were 102 incidents worldwide in the first three months of 2012; four people were killed, 212 crew members were taken hostage and 11 vessels were hijacked.

A further 45 vessels were boarded, there were 32 attempted attacks and 14 vessels were fired on.

A statement emailed to journalists from the International Chamber of Commerce ? the International Maritime Bureau is part of its anti-crime arm ? said there had been a dangerous rise in the number of attacks off Nigeria and other West African countries.

?Nigerian piracy is increasing in incidence and extending in range,? Pottengal Mukundan, director of the IMB Piracy Reporting Center, said in the statement.

?At least six of the 11 reported incidents in Nigeria occurred at distances greater than 70 nautical miles from the coast, which suggests that fishing vessels are being used as motherships to attack shipping further afield,? he added.

High levels of violence
The statement said there had been 10 reports of piracy from Nigeria in the first quarter of the year, the same as reported for the whole of 2011. A further attack in neighboring Benin was also attributed to Nigerian pirates.

It said two crew members were killed when their vessel was boarded 110 nautical miles off Nigeria.

However, Somalia continued to see the most incidents, with 43 attacks resulting in nine vessels being hijacked. This was down from the first quarter of 2011, when 97 incidents and 16 hijackings were reported.

Video: An intimate look at the search for pirates

?While the number of reported incidents in Nigeria is still less than Somalia, and hijacked vessels are under control of the pirates for days rather than months, the level of violence against crew is dangerously high,? Mukundan said.

The International Chamber of Commerce runs a global map of piracy attacks that is updated live.
