The Grandview Heights Public Library will encourage young and old alike to keep turning pages during the summer with reading clubs for kids and teens and an adult Reading Rewards program.
All three programs will begin Tuesday, may 29, and run through Aug. 4.
The children?s summer reading club will kick off may 29 with a magic show featuring local magician Erica Carlson.
The show will be offered at both 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. to allow working parents to attend with their children, said youth services librarian Eileen McNeil.
The theme for this summer?s children?s reading club is "Dream Big ? Read."
The club is open to youngsters though sixth grade.
Participants again will be able to earn prizes based on the amount of time they spend reading books or e-books, being read to or listening to audio books this summer, McNeil said.
Youngsters will earn a prize for every four hours of reading, and a grand prize of a summer reading club T-shirt will be awarded for those who complete 20 hours by Aug. 4, she said.
Among the activities planned in conjunction with the reading club will be Dream Big Days @ the Library, which will be held at 1 p.m. Mondays, June 4 through July 23.
"each week we?ll have a different theme related to a type of career kids dream about having ? things like science, art, music, Hollywood, magic and nature," McNeil said.
The Dream Big Days programs will feature stories, games and crafts and are open to children ages 5-12.
Tales to Treasures will be held at 10:30 a.m. June 8 and 22 and July 13, giving pre-readers and beginning readers the chance to team up with one of the library?s Volunteens (teenage volunteers) to read a story and create artwork.
Registration is not required for any of the summer reading activities, but children must register to participate in the reading club itself, McNeil said.
Youngsters can sign up beginning may 29 in the youth services department.
"own the Night ? Read," is the theme for the teen summer reading club.
Teens also can earn prizes for the reading they complete over the summer, and those who reach the 20-hour threshold will be entered into a drawing for an e-reader, McNeil said.
They can sign up for the teen club beginning may 29 in the Basement, the library?s space for teens, she said.
The goal of the summer reading clubs is to encourage children and teens to keep reading while school is out, McNeil said.
Last year, more than 800 people signed up for the reading clubs, she said.
"we get a lot of kids from outside Grandview who sign up," McNeil said. "Some kids who are really into reading like to sign up for reading clubs at several libraries."
The Reading Rewards program offers adults the chance to be entered for prizes for every entry form they fill out with a review of a book they have read or listened to, said reference department staff member Michelle Reinhart.
Entry forms can be found beginning may 29 at the reference and circulation desks, she said.
Adults do not have to sign up to participate in the Reading Rewards program, Reinhart said.
"even if you don?t sign up, I?ll be keeping track of anyone who turns in an entry form with a review of a book," she said.
Every two weeks, a drawing will be held for gift cards from local businesses, Reinhart said. The prizes are provided by the Friends of the Library.
Participants can sign up and set a personal reading goal for the summer, and those who reach their goal will be eligible to receive a $2 coupon for the Friends of the Library book sales.
"The adult program is meant to help encourage people to read and check out our materials," Reinhart said, "but another benefit is that it sends a good message if kids see their parents actively involved in reading."
