Japan considering new $5 billion gas pipeline from Eastern Russia

As Japan continues its quest for new sources of energy to replace the abrupt halting of almost all the country?s nuclear reactors, one major utility company has commented that strategy under consideration is a 4% billion gas pipeline from Russia?s far east to one of Tokyo?s industrial centers. A spokesman for Tokyo Gas says the offshore line would stretch 1,400 kilometers (870 miles) from the Russian island of Sakhalin to just outside the Japanese capital.

Along with Tokyo Gas, the other energy companies cooperating in the study of such a project are Japan Petroleum Exploration and Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal. No formal decision has been reached yet, however the project would be expected to take between five to seven years to complete. The Tokyo Gas spokesman has added that the idea for such a project has stemmed from the desire to diversify Japan?s sources of fossil fuels and crude materials.

Japan has rapidly become the world?s largest importer of liquified natural gas (LNG), and the nation?s energy costs continue to rise without the use of, or direct replacement for nuclear energy. The use of such a direct pipeline is said to be cheaper than importing gas by ship, and it would be equaled by the Japan-Russian governments? co-developed LNG terminal in the far eastern city of Vladivostok.
